The four areas at a glance
| Area | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historic centre | Couples, first visits, weekends | Walk everywhere; pedestrian streets; evening atmosphere | Car goes in a car park; some streets are lively at night |
| Near the station | Train arrivals, short stays | Practical; about 10 minutes' walk to the centre | Less character; a transit area |
| Bom Jesus | Views and nature | Quiet, gardens, views over the city | About 6 km from the centre; car needed in the evening |
| Outskirts | Business trips, guaranteed parking | Quick motorway access; parking | Chain hotels with no sense of the city |
The historic centre: for walking the city
This is the right answer for most couples. The cathedral, the Santa Bárbara garden, the Arco da Porta Nova and the cafés of Praça da República are a few minutes apart, and much of the area is pedestrianised. The trade-off is the car: drivers leave it in a covered car park such as Campo da Vinha. On streets with bars, weekend nights can be lively, so it is worth asking which way your room faces.
Near the station: practical, nothing more
Braga's train station is west of the centre, about 500 metres from the Arco da Porta Nova. Staying here makes sense for a single night or if you are travelling without a car. It is not the prettiest part of town, but the centre is a short walk away.
Bom Jesus: views and quiet, away from town
The Bom Jesus hillside, east of the city, has gardens, woodland and views over Braga. A good choice for rest if you have a car. The downside: the centre is about 15 minutes' drive away, and there is little to do on foot in the evening.
Outskirts and business districts
Modern chain hotels near motorway exits and shopping centres. Sensible for business trips or when you need parking at the door. For a couple's getaway, they lack the city.
How to choose, if you're travelling as a couple
- Quiet: in any old town, quiet depends on the room. Ask whether it faces the street or the inside, and whether it has sound insulation.
- Adults-only: few places in Braga are exclusively for adults; if that matters, check before booking.
- Parking: in the centre, expect a public car park a few minutes' walk away.
- Breakfast: check whether it is included; in many small places it is extra.
Senat: an adults-only urban retreat in the historic centre
Senat is on Rua do Souto, Braga's best-known pedestrian street. Ten adults-only rooms in a restored historic house, with a 600 m² private garden and reflecting pool, and the Egyptian Salon: a room painted in 1937 and one of the last surviving examples of revivalist Orientalism in Portugal. Breakfast is included and every guest is welcomed in person. It is not the right choice if you are travelling with children or looking for a large hotel with a pool and spa.
